Kottakkal Gopala Pisharody, a distinguished Kathakali musician, was born on 20 August 1938 in Chunangat, Ottappalam, to Mannarkad Govindapurathu Bharatha Pisharody and Kizhakke Pisharath Madhavikutty Pisharassiar. From an early age, he was drawn to the rich traditions of Kerala’s classical arts, particularly the evocative rhythms and melodies of Kathakali Sangeetham.

കോട്ടക്കൽ ഗോപാല പിഷാരോടി 1938 ആഗസ്റ്റ് 20-ന് ഒറ്റപ്പാലം ചുനങ്ങാട്ട് ജനിച്ചു. പിതാവ് മണ്ണാർക്കാട് ഗോവിന്ദപുരത്തു ഭാരത പിഷാരോടി, മാതാവ് കിഴക്കേ പിഷാരത്ത് മാധവിക്കുട്ടി പിഷാരസ്യാർ. ബാല്യത്തിൽ തന്നെ കഥകളി സംഗീതത്തിന്റെ ആഴങ്ങളിലേക്കുള്ള ആകർഷണം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കോട്ടക്കൽ പി.എസ്.വി. നാട്യസംഘം എന്ന പ്രശസ്ത സ്ഥാപനത്തിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചു.

After completing his Secondary School Certificate (SSC), he joined the prestigious Kottakkal PSV Natyasangham, a renowned institution dedicated to Kathakali. Under the tutelage of legendary gurus Vasu Nedungadi and Gopala Kurup, he underwent rigorous training for eight years, mastering the intricate vocal techniques and emotive expressions essential to Kathakali music.

Upon completion of his training, Gopala Pisharody was appointed as a teacher at PSV Natyasangham, where he served with dedication for nearly 29 years. His tenure was marked by excellence in performance and mentorship, contributing significantly to the preservation and propagation of Kathakali Sangeetham.

As part of the Natyasangham troupe, he traveled extensively across India and abroad, showcasing the grandeur of Kathakali in countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, and North Korea. His performances were lauded for their depth and authenticity, earning him a place among the most respected Kathakali vocalists of his time.

നാട്യസംഘ സംഘത്തിനൊപ്പം ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലേക്കും ഇന്തോനേഷ്യ, സിംഗപ്പൂർ, മലേഷ്യ, ചൈന, ഉത്തര കൊറിയ തുടങ്ങിയ വിദേശ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കും അദ്ദേഹം യാത്ര ചെയ്തു. ഓരോ വേദിയിലും കഥകളിയുടെ മഹത്വം അദ്ദേഹം സംഗീതത്തിലൂടെ പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു.

കലാമണ്ഡലം നമ്പീശൻ, വാസു നെടുങ്ങാടി, ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണ കുറുപ്പ്, ഗംഗാധരൻ തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രശസ്ത കഥകളി ഗായകരോടൊപ്പം അദ്ദേഹം പാടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഓരോ പ്രകടനത്തിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സംഗീതം ആഴവും ആത്മാർത്ഥതയും നിറഞ്ഞതായിരുന്നു.

His legacy continues through his many disciples, both within and beyond the walls of Natyasangham. Notable among them are Narayanan, Pradeep, and Madhu from the Sangham, as well as P.D. Namboodiri, Manoj, Krishna Kumar Raja, and others who have carried forward his teachings with pride.

? Personal Life
Gopala Pisharody resides in his cherished home, “Ragasoudham”, with his wife Kongad Kavil Pisharath Shobhana Pisharassiar, sharing a life steeped in tradition, music, and cultural heritage.

ഇപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹം  ഭാര്യ കോങ്ങാട് കാവിൽ പിഷാരത്ത് ശോഭന പിഷാരസ്യാരോടൊപ്പം “രാഗസൗധം” എന്ന വീട്ടിൽ താമസിക്കുന്നു. സംഗീതം, സംസ്കാരം, പാരമ്പര്യം എന്നിവയാൽ സമ്പന്നമായ ജീവിതമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം നയിക്കുന്നത്.
