The Mumbai unit of the Samajam, formerly known as “Kerala Pisharody Samajam, Mumbai unit” came into existence on 07th August 1982, at an auspicious function held in the prestigious Poddar College Hall at Matunga in the presence of the then office bearers of the parent body, namely Sri A P K Pisharody (President), Sri K P K Pisharody (Vice President), Sri K R S Pisharody (Secretary) and the Ex Mayor of Mumbai Sri M Madhavan, who presided over the occasion.
Thus, the Mumbai unit was registered under the Mumbai Public Trust Act 1950 and Society’s Registration Act 1860, with the founder President (Late) Shri P.M. Pisharody offering his residence as the registered address.
The unit was rechristened to “Pisharody Samajam, Mumbai” after approval of Charity commissioner on 2nd September 1995. Today, amongst all the units under the parent body, the Mumbai unit stands at the top in terms of memberships, overall activities and achievements.
Achievements:
Mumbai Unit was adjudged as Best Unit among the Samajam Units during 2005 and 2012.
Medical Assistance:
Extending its presence into the social and humanitarian circles, the Mumbai Unit had its first breakthrough on 22 March 1998 by conducting a medical camp in the Municipal Lower Primary School at the remote Javsai Village in Ambernath which was attended by 19 doctors. Around 242 people had the privilege of availing medical aid. Further on, one more medical camp was organized in the same place on 21 December 1999 which was attended by 12 doctors and around 600 people availed medical aid. Medicines worth Rs. 80,000 were distributed free of cost with the assistance of a team of medical representatives.
Also, a BLOOD DONATION CAMP was conducted in association with Pushpak Bal Udyan & KEM Hospital– Borivali on 6 December 1998 which attracted about 56 donations.
Further initiatives undertaken include:
- A financial assistance scheme started on 10th April 1988.
- A Medical reimbursement Benefit Scheme started on 15th July 1989. Medical assistance is given to the needy member to the tune of Rs.10,000/- per member per annum. Have also assisted number of members and non members in case of emergency by collecting special contribution from members.
- P.A.Pisharoti memorial fund for treatment of cancer started in 2004 by the family members of late Shri P A Pisharoti, founder member and past President of the unit, to render financial assistance to the needy and deserving cancer patients in the community.
Educational Assistance & Awards: Educational assistance is given to the needy and deserving children every year. Mumbai unit have constituted the following awards for the children of the members of the unit-

- Late K N Pisharody Memorial Award, sponsored by Shri. T U Pisharody for student who score highest mark in B.Sc – Rs.1000/-

Cultural Wing
A sub-committee of the unit called “Cultural Wing” was constituted on 14 August 1994 which segregated into itself the cultural interests of the unit. A vibrant mix of all ages, it has been in the forefront in exercising intellect as well as developing and enhancing young talent in the unit. Various competitions in the fields of fine art, music, dance, indoor games, quiz etc were among the regular programs constituted and conducted by the wing. Of late they are conducting Annual Programs every year in different areas of Mumbai.
Directory
Starting 1986, the Mumbai Unit decided to integrate all the Mumbai Pisharodies by publishing a directory containing the contact details and family information of the members. Mumbai unit was one of the first units to release a Directory of the members’ way back in 1986. Since then it was updated in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2007 and 2014. The latest edition was published on 30th November 2014. Those who would like to have a copy of the directory through post may contact the Secretary or write to mail@pisharodysamajam.com with a DD/MO in favour of “Pisharody Samajam” payable at Mumbai for Rs.150/- (Rs.50/- + Postage charges Rs.100/-)per copy.
Premises
In January 1984, a rented accommodation was arranged keeping in mind the requirement of an office room as well as an open arm for those who come to Mumbai to fulfill their dreams but had no place to stay. Unfortunately, these premises had to be surrendered in January 1988 due to the difficulty in meeting the maintenance expenditure.
Further, in 1991, a plot of land at Ambernath measuring 502 sq. yards was purchased. In the following year a compound wall was constructed to the said plot. The same was disposed off in 2018 after recommendations from AGM since Samajam could not develop the plot due to various geographical and logistical constraints.
Thanks to the wholehearted support and magnanimous donations from the members, today, the unit can proudly boast of having their own premises in Shivalaya Building at Gandhinagar, Dombivli which was acquired and inaugurated it on 21st January 2007.
Gestures of Humanity
The Mumbai unit, like its parent body, has rendered its humanitarian responsibility towards the rehabilitation of those affected by natural calamities and wars. The unit has made generous contributions to:
(i) Prime Minister’s Relief Fund during Kargil war
(ii) Chief Minister’s Relief Fund during Latur earthquake
(iii) Chief Minister’s Relief Fund during Gujarat earthquake
(iv) Conducted a Food, Cloth and Note books distribution program at Khanduchiwadi and Chinchwadi villages at Shahpur, Thane Dt. on 11th December 2011 and distributed food and clothing & note books to 110 families in the said villages.
(v) Donated 75 Bench-cum-Desk to Anudanith Aadivasi Ashram School, Talavali, Tokawde, Murbad on 23rd June 2018.
(vi) PE&WS “Kerala Flood Relief Fund” to help victims of Kerala flood August 2018.
(vii) Kerala “Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund” during Kerala Flood of August 2018.
Further, the unit has also provided extensive contribution through the co-operation of members towards various welfare activities at the centre including:
- Contribution to the Central Office At Trichur
- “Home For Homeless Scheme” of PE&WS (Pisharody Educational and Welfare Society, a charitable society established as a sub unit of Pisharody Samajam in 1980)
- Contributed majorly to the Pension Corpus of PEWS.
- Construction of Guruvayur Guest House which is the first project of PP & TDT (Pisharody Pilgrimage & Tourism Development Trust, established as a sub unit of Pisharody Samajam in 2002)
In short, right since its inception, the Mumbai unit of the Pisharody Samajam has always been setting a fine example in every front that other units could always look up to. The entire credit goes to the whole hearted support and co-operation of each and every member, who have time and again proved the good old saying that unity is indeed strength. Today, the unit has reached a position where sky is the limit and it proudly upholds the Samajam’s moral “Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya” – from darkness to light.
