Thrikkandiyoor Achutha Pisharody
An authority in Astronomy, Sanskrit grammar and
Ayurveda, Achutha Pisharody lived between 1550-1621, in the period of Thunjath Ezuthachan. He was the Preceptor
(Guru) of Melpathur Narayana
Bhattathirippad (Author of 'Narayaneeyam'). He is remembered
chiefly for his part in composition of the great work Narayaneeyam by Melpathur
Bhattathiripad. Bhattathiri was one of his disciples who showed his immense
loyalty and love for his guru and It is said that he willingly took up his
teacher's ailment - rheumatism. Pisharody completely recovered from it but it
was found that nothing could cure Bhattathiri of his illness. It was then that
Bhattathiri, on the advice of Ezhuhachan, composed Narayaneeyam, on the
completion of which he got relieved from rheumatism and restored his healthy
self. So, Pisharody triggered the composition of this great work, which went on
to become a landmark in the Malayalam literary history. He discovered the
technique of 'the reduction of the ecliptic'. He authored Sphutanirnaya, Raasigolasphutaneeti (raasi means
zodiac, gola means sphere and neeti roughly means justice), Karanottama (1593)
and a four-chapter treatise Uparaga Kriyakarma on lunar and solar eclipses.
His other major works are 'Goladeepika', 'Jathakabharanam',
'Horosarochayam', 'Karanothamam' in astronomy and 'Pravesakam' in on Sanskrit
grammer.

Pazhayannoor Rama Pisharody
Pazhayannur Rama Pisharody (1894-1960) was a
writer in Malayalam and English, of considerable repute, as well as an untiring
philanthropist and social worker. He was also well-known for his activities in
the areas of moral education in schools and colleges, and his promotion of
spiritual discussions and discourses.
He was born in Pazhayannur Thekkoottu Pisharom, located in Pazhayannur village,
Thrissur District, in Malayalam era 1069, Ashtami Rohini in Chinga masam
(1894, August-September).
Pazhayannur village is home to the temple about which five famous doubts (Pazhayannur
Bhagavathikshethrathepatti anchu samshayangal) are told, and whose deity,
Bhagavathi, is the kula devata of Kochi royal family. (A temple dedicated to
Pazhayannur Bhagavathi may be found even now, close to Jewish town in Kochi
island.)
Rama Pisharody was the only offspring of Vengi Pisharassyar. His father was an
Ayyar of great reputation in the community in Pazhayannur. Belonging to a family
of limited means, Rama Pisharody’s education was limited to a Diploma in
Commerce, on the strength of which he attained the position of Commercial
Assistant in various colleges in the then Madras Presidency including Government
Victoria College, Palghat, Government Brennen College, Thalassery, and
Guruvayoorappan College, Kozhikode. More than this however, Rama Pisharody was a
substantially self-made man who between 1925-60, occupied a position in the
literary world of Kerala and in the Pisharody community far higher than what his
education or official position could have laid claim to. Among the immense
variety of activities that he engaged himself in and through which he acquired
his reputation and acceptance in Kerala of his period, were those of writer of
plays, novels, travelogues and short stories; broadcaster of speeches on All
India Radio; traveler; moral educator; and organizer of religious discourses;
not to speak of Income Tax and Sales Tax consultancy through which he
supplemented his limited income as teacher, to meet the needs of not only his
immediate family and relations, but also the considerable philanthropic and
social work that he funded out of his own pocket.
Rama Pisharody started his literary career with five plays in Malayalam which do
not seem to have received much public attention. But soon he moved on to and
found his true genre in writing about the great men of history and religion like
Ashoka, Gautama the Buddha, Shankaracharya and Ramanujacharya, in simple
Malayalam which could be read by school-children and people of limited
education. “Avatara Purushanmar” was a work that brought forth the essence of
the incarnations of God in various religions. His book, “Bhoota Daya”, which was
published in 1939 under the auspices of the Madras Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals, celebrated the compassion for animals demonstrated in the
life stories of Turgenev, Tolstoy, Abraham Lincoln, Gautama the Buddha, etc.
Another touching book on self-refinement through compassion for animals, titled
Karuna, was one of some fifteen books authored by him that were approved by
Madras Textbook Committee for school use.
In today’s world of instant access to information and any written matter through
Google search, it is difficult to appreciate the educational value of these
books to the adolescents of the 1940s and 1950s.
His two novels were Pativratharatnam based on the story of Kovilan and Kannagi,
and Swarnakumari, an adaptation to the Indian milieu of Sir Walter Scott’s
“Quentin Durward”. For many of us who were young boys in the 1950s, his
adaptations of Tolstoy’s “How Much Land Does A Man Need?”, “Two Old Men” and
other stories were our first exposure to those highest principles of ethics and
morality that are common to all humanity.
Progressively, Rama Pisharody seems to have moved into the area that was of
greatest concern to him – the moral upliftment of human beings.
In the 1930s and 1940s when travel in the Third Class (which was all that he
could afford) was a living hell, he travelled along with wife and children in
the South and in the North and wrote a travelogue in the format of a diary,
called Naveena Bharatham, which gave an exposure of (in those days distant)
places like Kashi, Gaya, Patna, Allahabad, and Rameswaram, to Malayalam readers.
His articles regarding various places of pilgrimage along with photographs taken
by himself, were a regular feature of the Mathrubhoomi Weekly in the 1950s.
He also wrote textbooks on Commercial Geography and a series of books on
Aadaayanikuthi, Vilpananikuthi, etc. which were considered as valuable reference
books for traders and businessmen at that time in Kerala.
In mid-1950s, he organized a series of lectures on the Hindu religion in
Guruvayoorappan College, Kozhikode, and edited and published a compendium of the
lectures delivered by famous Swamis and Gurus of Ramakrishna Mission, etc.
In the 1950s, he was a regular broadcaster on All India Radio, Kozhikode. In
fact his last broadcast essay on “Athishayoktiyum athinte Prathyaghathangalum”
was featured on 30th May, 1960, just three days before his death due to heart
attack.
Towards the end of his life, he also wrote and published a collection of essays
in English on Mahatma Gandhi (whom he called the Second Light of Asia in
reference to Sir Edwin Arnold’s poem titled “Light of Asia” about the life of
the Buddha), and other subjects as varied as Modern Trends in Education, India
in the Post-War World, etc. An essay attempting an explanation of some
place-names in Kerala (which attracted a satirical comment from the famous
humorist Sanjayan) and another staunchly defending Malabar Temple Entry, as well
as articles written in Mathrubhoomi Weekly on various ancient scripts of
Southern India, demonstrate the wide variety of his interests.
In 1933, he presented a resolution in the Pisharody samajam conference at
Chovvara, earnestly pleading for allowing the so-called “lower castes” to enter
and worship in various temples of Kerala. This resolution was passed by a big
majority vote.
He was an extremely hardworking man with considerable organizational ability. He
is referred to as an uncompromising rebel who called a spade a spade, and
exposed cant and hypocrisy, irrespective of consequences to himself; and yet
lavish in praise of good conduct, right living and unselfishness whenever and
wherever he came across it.
Rama Pisharody was also famous for his charitable work that he did like a
Harijan colony with wells and tanks for their exclusive use, and a maternity
ward in Pazhayannur government hospital. He was also active in freedom fight
activities during 1935-45.
Rama Pisharody married Ammu (Parvathi) Pisharassiar of Attur Pisharam,
Wadakkancheri in Thrissur Dt. in 1920, and they had six offspring. Of them,
their eldest daughter Amminikutty passed away in 1941, at the age of 19, while
studying for MBBS in Madras. This was naturally a great tragedy for Rama
Pisharody and his wife, and on his part, he tried to learn to live with this
sorrow by getting evermore deeply involved in his philanthropic and other
activities.
Rama Pisharody retired from active service in 1955 and passed away at Attur on
2nd June, 1960 at the age of 66.
Ammu Pisharassiar passed away in Delhi in 1974. His only surviving daughter
Thankam passed away in Thrissur in 1993. His eldest son Damodaran retired as
Member Postal Board in 1983, and passed away in Thrissur in 1996. Another son
Viswanathan who retired from the Railways in 1991, passed away in 2006. Raman,
another son who was a well-known environmental engineering expert, passed away
in 2010. Ramachandran, his youngest and only surviving son(Retired Chief
Engineer from Indian Railways) is active in Hindusthani classical music and
writing on philosophical/spiritual subjects. He lives in Palghat at present.
Anayath Krishna Pisharody
It is a historical fact that the famous Sanskrit
scholar, Thiruvegappura Anayath Krishna Pisharody was considered as the
Guru(teacher) of Manavedan Raja, the then Zamorin Raja of Kozhikode who
conceived the classical dance drama Krishnanattam based on his text
Krishnageethi. Mahaakavi Ulloor mentioned about this in his Kerala Sahithya
Charithram(chapter 33). Manavedan also mentioned about his Guru Anayath Krishna
Pisharody in his text Poorvabharatha Champu. A commentary to Poorvabharatha
Champu, Krishneeyam, was composed apparently by Anayath Krishna Pisharoty.
